The limits stipulated in ISO1801 are not longer usable to evaluate the quality of a recently installed fiber optic link.  They are too relaxed.
As application limits continue to become more stringent, limits proposed by ISO and ANSI are no longer acceptable to evaluate the quality of a fiber optic infrastructure. Using recent ISO and ANSI test limits is especially problematic when testing multi-mode fiber optic links with more than two connections, which is often the case in data centers.

These values are not applicable when testing links containing MPO connectors.

Users could decide to set optional Length and Overall Loss limit in accordance with the application.  For example: if the link is OM3 multimode fiber and the application is IEEE 10GBASE-SR, these values could be respectively 300m and 2,60dB (@ 850nm).

Introduction

As application limits continue to become more stringent, limits proposed by ISO and ANSI are no longer acceptable to evaluate the quality of a fiber optic infrastructure. Using recent ISO and ANSI test limits is especially problematic when testing multi-mode fiber optic links with more than two connections, which is often the case in data centers.

Solution

Use these custom limits for length/loss testing of LC, SC, ST, FC and E2000 terminated fiber optic links.

Users could decide to set optional Length and Overall Loss limit in accordance with the application.  For example: if the link is OM3 multimode fiber and the application is IEEE 10GBASE-SR, these values could be respectively 300m and 2,60dB (@ 850nm).

More information on the use of custom limits is available during the Certified Cabling Test Training module VERSIVFO.

Parameter Default value Recommended value
Length (m) 2000 or 5000 N/A
Connection Loss (dB) 0,75 0,30
Splice Loss (dB) 0,30 0,15
Loss/km @ 850nm (dB/km) 3,00 3,00
Loss/km @ 1300nm (dB/km) 1,50 1,50
Loss/km @ 1310nm (dB/km) 1,00 0.40
Loss/km @ 1550nm (dB/km) 1,00 0.40
